Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

Friends,

Saturday, March 22, was a dark day in American law enforcement history. As you are probably well aware by now, four Oakland Police Department officers were shot and killed in the line of duty. They were killed in cold blood for doing their job; protecting the people they were entrusted to protect.

This was the single worst police line-of-duty death incident in California since the infamous Newhall CHP shooting in 1970, according to our Santa Barbara County Sheriff, Bill Brown.

I know you will join in me in keeping your thoughts and prayers with the families of these fallen heroes; Sgt. Mark Dunakin, Officer John Hege, Sgt. Ervin Romans, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai.

In their memory, all Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department flags will be flown at half mast, and all sworn Sheriff's Department personnel will wear mourning ribbons on their badges until these four brave men are laid to rest.

To show our support for the men and women who put their lives on the line, each and every day, in order to keep our families and communities safe, I have asked that the City of Carpinteria also fly our flags at half mast today and to do so until these men are laid to rest.

Saturday's tragedy is a reminder of the fact that irrespective of the current recession; the state budget crisis; or even our own local budget challenges, certain functions of our state and local government must always remain an absolute top priority...law enforcement and public safety should be at the top of the list.

Again, I hope you will keep these officers families in your thoughts and prayers and will take some time to consider the sacrifice they made and the sacrifice our own local deputies make on our behalf, each and everyday.

Sincerely,

Joe Armendariz
Council member, City of Carpinteria
